Wachovia Bank & Trust Building Rehabilitation

Adaptive reuse of Winston-Salem’s historic Wachovia Bank & Trust building brought 86 new apartments to the city’s urban core while preserving one of its most iconic landmarks. Originally constructed in 1911 as the headquarters of Wachovia Bank & Trust, this Renaissance Revival-style building was Winston-Salem’s first steel-frame skyscraper. It was the city’s tallest building until 1915.

The building’s adaptive reuse retained the key architectural features distinctive to its period of initial construction. These features include its brass entry canopies, marble lobby floors and walls, coffered lobby ceilings, central elevator banks, multiple bank vaults, and ornate interior railings. Mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and telecom systems were replaced to accommodate state-of-the-art urban dwelling units.

New features make the building comfortable for modern living. A new rooftop deck provides expansive views of the city skyline. Apartment units will feature hardwood floors, while carpeted corridors dampen the sound of foot traffic. Full-height tile walls, glass shower doors, and lighted vanity mirrors imbue unit bathrooms with a sense of cosmopolitan sophistication.
