Inspired by the successful adaptive reuse of Columbia’s Olympia and Granby Mills, the rehabilitation of 701 Whaley revived the mill village’s historic community center. 701 Whaley had long served as a hub of mill village civic life, home to a basketball court, swimming pool, barbershop, canteen, billiard room, and hand hall before it feel into disrepair and sat vacant for many years. Careful removal of the modern infill and restoration of deteriorated historic fabric brought the building back to life as a vibrant community space.
This project leveraged federal, state, and local historic tax credits and won multiple awards for adaptive reuse and historic preservation.
